Theme: Slience(s) & Knowing(s)
This session proposes to explore Silence(s) and Knowing(s), with a particular emphasis on the role of Silence in collective thinking and knowing processes.
Stimulus
We will use selected excerpts of a text from Pannikar, R. (1995). Invisible Harmony. Essays on contemplation & responsibility (H. J. Cages, Ed.). Fortress Press. Please find the selected stimulus passages here.
Specific guiding questions to be explored include:
- What kinds of Silences are there?
- How do we practice or experience (different types of) Silence with others?
- How can different kinds of Silence contribute to epistemically potent environments?
Preparation
Before the session, please read the stimulus passages.
The following questions are suggested for a preliminary individual reflection:
- What role has Silence played in my thinking and how do I engage with Silence?
- What kinds of Silence have I experienced and do I practice it?
- In what ways have I practiced Silence with others?
